3 systems of government:
monarchy-king
aristocracy-small group of nobles
oligarchy-few powerful people

Tyrants seize the power:
Powerful, wealthy people appealed to common people for support to help them seize the power these type of people are called Tyrants.  They do not have the same definition that tyrants in modern day have.  They are the opposite of harsh and work for the interest of the common people.

Athens Build a Limited Democracy:
Democracy is ruled by the people:
Draco 621 b.c. (made a legal code)-> Solon 594 b.c. (made 4 social classes and only members from the top three could hold political positions)-> Cleisthenes 500 b.c. (10 classes and made the council of 500)

Education:Wealthy boys started school at 7 studying logic, debate, and public speaking.  When they became teenagers they were sent to military school.  Girls were meant to stay home and cook.

Sparta Build a Military State: 752 b.c conquered Messinia ->Helots
Government:Council of elders (30), 2 Kings, and 5 law official.  They almost lost a revolt and decided to become decided they needed to become more powerful.  Men have to serve in army (till age 60) boys left home at 7 years old.  Women would run the family estates.
