Cleisthenes

What Cleisthenes did was a huge step forward getting "regular input" involved in governing but this first democracy had its limited citizens could participate but only one-fifth of Athenian were citizens. After several years Athenians practiced a direct democracy. Direct Democracy: -It's where the state is ruled by its citizens -rules is based on citizenship -majority rule decides the vote -it was first practiced in Athens under Cleisthenes by around 500 BCE. We discussed the importance of the democracy and how its shaped our culture today.

*508 BCE*

Isagora becomes archon eponymous He ostracizes Cleisthenes Cleisthenes supporters and the ordinary Athenian citizens revolt against Isagoras tyranny. They trap Isagoras on the acropolis for two days on the third day he fled and was banished in *****508 BCE***** first time someone rose up against their own leader. Cleisenes member of elite and rich but crafty position saw the value of tapping into talents intelligence and energies of the non-aristocrats... To bad he didn't realize the value of women citizen:native, guy, land owner, adult, free men This all the notes I took because I was at the nurse.

Polotics of Greece

No women. No middle class. Certainly , no slaves Certain aristocrat What to do if your on the outside? -Alliances with hoplites -greek a tyrant someone who would seize power. -Definition tyrant someone who rules outside framework of polis -Modern tyrant abusive/ oppressive leader Draco (621 ace) draconian- overly harsh punishment All athenians are equal death punishment for many crimes debt is slavery Solons reform594 bce Outlaws debt slavery All athenian citizens can speak at assembly's Any citizens can press charges against wrongdoers. more reforms (500 BCE) allowed al citizens to submit lows for debate at the assembly created council of 500. can you see leading---> democracy only free adult mate property owners could be citizens sorry to: women, slaves, foreigners.
